Cowboys, Indians, Hobos, Gamblers, Patriots & Sunsets

This project is so much more than a book. It’s an experience and experiment in the father-son relationship. It began with my dear friend and collaborator Aaron Huey planning out a road trip to one of his favorite places, as a way to bond with his five-year-old son. As a Nat Geo photographer, Aron was often on the road, travelling the world on assignments. By creating this project, Aaron honored the tradition of mentorship, of passing on the family trade. He created a way not only to spend more time with his child, but to make that time something deeply meaningful and impactful for both of them. And, because Aaron is forever an artist and creator to the marrow of his bones, his father-son adventure became a grand art experiment as well, in which he shared the beautiful lessons of these advantures, through Hawkeye’s images and his own. What can we learn about art, America, and ourselves from the Polaroid photographs of a child? This project offers a journey down that road, and into the heart of a bold, brilliant father-son duo.

“People always ask if Hawkeye wants to be a photographer like his father—this is not at all my intention. I hope that this collection of photographs will represent just one in a lifetime of collaborations. I am not trying to make a photographer. I am trying to make an engaged young man, a truth seeker, a beauty maker, and a warrior.”

The Kickstarter for A 4-year-old’s Portrait of the American West by Hawkeye Huey was shared by Jared Leto, Kid President, and other major influencers, leading to a campaign that helped launch the 6-year-old photographer from Instagram fame to National Geographic’s youngest photographer. Press coverage from the Today Show, Seattle Times, Huffington Post and Petapixel created awareness in art, local & mainstream audiences for cross-demographic success. Our mid-campaign analog photo contest engaged families around the world. I published the book, a post card set, and a sold-out limited edition through Outsider Books, the publishing house I co-founded with Aaron Huey (Hawkeye’s dad & mentor).

Along with the trade paperback book, I published a post card set and a sold-out limited edition art book through Outsider Books, the publishing house I co-founded with Aaron.
